Bamboo: renewable, naturally occurring material

Pros/cons:

  • Eco-friendly

  • Adds warmth to your space

  • Has antibacterial properties

  • It is easily stained, scratched and nicked

  • Stains cannot be removed from washing, need to sand and reseal

  • Not heat resistant

  • Ability to refinish by sanding and resealing

  • Requires sealant, like mineral oil, beeswax or tung oil

  • Not water resistant and moisture can warp it, so be careful near the sink especially (consider multiple applications of sealant to avoid water damage)

  • Limited color options

How to care and maintain bamboo:

  • Wipe with a damp cloth and sponge

  • Use an all-purpose, non-abrasive cleaner

  • Do not use harsh chemicals or ammonia

  • Wipe spills up quickly to avoid staining

  • Mineral oil and beeswax are best sealants for bamboo

  • Tung oil is another sealant, but derived from nuts so could cause an allergic reaction

  • Apply sealant once/month

  • When applying sealant, follow the grains of the bamboo
